We can't help it. We like to be around people that look like us, talk like us, and share similar life experiences. The problem is that biases can adversely affect our judgment when it comes to hiring.
We recommend creating a "success profile" for the position. It defines what it takes for that role to be successful. It's different than a task and responsibility defined job description.
You should also consider personality assessments to help identify hidden traits that may be different than what you saw during an interview.
